An insulating material with refractory properties, including insulating fire bricks and lightweight castable refractories (see the Castable Refractories section). Firebricks are used in the hottest part of the kiln, and fireproof insulating material is used on the outside to reduce the loss of thermal energy. The thermal conductivity of fireproof insulating material is low, about 1/5 to 1/10 that of refractories. Closed pores are the most effective way to provide insulation, and diatomaceous earth is generally manufactured from artificially made porous silica SiO 2 -alumina Al 2 O 3 type refractory raw materials, but natural diatomaceous earth is a high-silica fireproof insulating material that is cut into brick shapes and used as is.
