A decapod crustacean of the family Parasitidae (illustration). A large crab with a carapace width of up to 15 cm. The carapace is square and reddish brown. There are many sharp black spines near the front edge of the carapace, on the claws and ambulatory legs. It lives on rocks at depths of 10 to 50 meters and is caught in gill nets used for spiny lobsters. It is sometimes eaten, but there are not many of them. It has been recorded from the coast of the Boso Peninsula to Okinawa and southern Australia. It spawns in the summer. Its diet is unknown. The snow crab of the family Parasitidae is also called Matsuba crab in Shimane and Tottori prefectures, but it is a completely different species.
