...During the Pleistocene epoch, the area was covered by continental glaciers, and today there are small glacial lakes scattered throughout the area. In 1534, French explorer J. Cartier visited the area, erected a large cross near the present-day city of Gaspé, and declared Canada a French territory. Many of the residents are of French descent.
