After independence was proclaimed by Bolivar, the country was subject to unstable rule by military caudillos for half a century. However, during the reign of Ramón Castilla (in office 1845-51, 1855-62), who abolished slavery, political stability was relatively high. In 1872, with the prosperity of the guano industry as a backdrop, the first civilian in the history of the Republic, Manuel Pardo (in office 1872-76), came to power. …
