Molecules with pi bonds, especially those with relatively large pi-electron conjugated systems, tend to form molecular complexes that are weakly bonded to atoms or molecules with high electron affinity or, conversely, atoms or molecules with low ionization potential (ionization energy). Such molecular complexes are called pi complexes. Many pi complexes can be extracted as crystals, but there are many that form in solution but cannot be extracted as crystals. π結合をもつ分子,とくに比較的大きなπ電子共役系をもつ分子は,電子親和力の大きい原子・分子,あるいは逆にイオン化ポテンシャル(イオン化エネルギー)が小さい原子・分子と弱い力で結合した分子錯体を形成する傾向がある。このような分子錯体をπ錯体という。π錯体には,結晶として取り出すことができるものも多いが,溶液中では錯体が形成されるが結晶として取り出すことができないものも少なくない。結晶状で得られるπ錯体の代表的なものとしては,ヒドロキノン―キノン錯体(キンヒドロン)が知られている。
