〘 noun 〙 A promise of marriage. Especially in the early modern period, it refers to an engagement arrangement made between a man and a woman of a samurai family who were allowed to marry. It is established by the exchange of betrothal gifts. Encirclement. ※ Chinkaishu (1536), Article 165: "The daughter of a man who is in a relationship with another is a single person, and is not a person of the same sex."
