Luther's translation of the Bible - Luther-bibel

The religious reformer Luther insisted that Christian faith should be based solely on the Bible, and from May 1521, during the nine months he was protected in Wartburg Castle, he spent about ten weeks translating the New Testament from the then common Latin translation, the Vulgate, into German, referring to the Greek text. This was eventually published in Wittenberg in September 1522, with 3,000 copies printed, a large number for the time, and is therefore known as the September Bible. It is said that at least 14 German translations of the Bible, including partial translations, existed before Luther, but Luther's translation gained such a large readership that a second edition of 3,000 copies had to be reprinted that same year.

宗教改革者ルターは，キリスト教信仰が聖書のみによるべきことを主張したが，1521年5月から，ワルトブルク城に保護されていた9ヵ月間のうちの10週ほどをかけて，新約聖書を，ギリシア文を参照しつつ，当時一般的だったラテン語訳《ウルガタ》からドイツ語に翻訳した。これはやがて22年9月ウィッテンベルクで，当時としては多い部数である3000部が出版されたので，《9月聖書》と呼ばれる。ルター以前にも，部分訳を含め少なくも14種のドイツ語訳聖書が存在していたといわれるが，ルターのそれは多くの読者を得，その年のうちに第2版3000部を増刷しなければならなかったほどだという。
