Araki Jogen

A Western-style painter from Nagasaki in the late Edo period. Originally from the Ichinose family, he was commonly known as Zenjuro, later Zenshiro. He went by the name Nyogen. He studied painting under the Karae Mekiki master Araki Genyu, and was adopted by him to take over Genyu's profession, but he soon quit and returned to the Ichinose family. He is thought to have studied under the Western-style painter Wakasugi Isohachi, and drew Western genre scenes in oil paintings on linen, which was professional for the time, using copperplate brush paintings of genre scenes from the West as a reference.

江戸後期の長崎の洋風画家。もと一瀬(いちのせ)氏。通称善十郎、のち善四郎。如元と号した。唐絵目利(からえめきき)職荒木元融(げんゆう)に絵を学び、その養子となって元融の職を継いだが、まもなく辞し、一瀬氏に戻った。彼はおそらく洋風画家若杉五十八(いそはち)に学んだと思われ、西洋から渡来した銅版筆彩の風俗画などを参考に、当時としては本格的な麻布(まふ)油彩の西洋風俗図を描いた。
