An old town in the center of Amakusa Shimoshima, Amakusa District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Many small villages are semi-agricultural, semi-fishing, producing rice, fruit trees, and vegetables, and cultivating shrimp, sea bream, yellowtail, and puffer fish. Pearl farming is particularly popular. Sakitsu, overlooking Urauchiura, flourished as a good port in the early modern period and is home to a Catholic cathedral. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and Amakusa District's Ariake Town, Goshoura Town, Kuratake Town, Sumimoto Town, Shinwa Town, Itsuwa Town, and Amakusa Town to become a city. 119.29 km2 . 6,570 people (2003).
