An old town in the center of Amakusa Shimoshima, Amakusa District, Kumamoto Prefecture. Many small villages are semi-agricultural, semi-fishing, producing rice, fruit trees, and vegetables, and cultivating shrimp, sea bream, yellowtail, and puffer fish. Pearl farming is particularly popular. Sakitsu, overlooking Urauchiura, flourished as a good port in the early modern period and is home to a Catholic cathedral. In March 2006, it merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and Amakusa District's Ariake Town, Goshoura Town, Kuratake Town, Sumimoto Town, Shinwa Town, Itsuwa Town, and Amakusa Town to become a city. 119.29 km2 . 6,570 people (2003). 熊本県天草郡,天草下島中部の旧町。半農半漁の小集落が多く,米,果樹,蔬菜を産し,クルマエビ,タイ,ハマチ,フグなどの養殖を行う。特に,真珠の養殖が盛ん。浦内浦に臨む崎津は近世良港として栄え,カトリックの天主堂がある。2006年3月,本渡市,牛深市,天草郡有明町,御所浦町,倉岳町,栖本町,新和町,五和町,天草町と合併し市制,天草市となる。119.29km2。6570人(2003)。
