Born: November 22, 1725. Altman Stein
Died: June 28, 1775. A German, Bavarian sculptor of the Munich Rococo period. He studied sculpture at the Vienna Academy in 1752. Many of his works are religious sculptures with Christian themes, but he has assimilated medieval tastes into the light, decorative expression unique to Rococo, resulting in elegant pieces. The elongated physique, long face, and strong facial expression are Gothic, but the dynamic overall composition is rather Baroque. His most famous work is the altar of Rot am Inn Cathedral, which he created between 1760 and 1762 and is a typical example of German Rococo. A particular speciality of his works are painted wooden sculptures, of which such fine examples as Tobias and the Angel (1763) at Bürgazar in Munich, the Pieta (64) and the Annunciation (64) in the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul in Weyrn, and the Annunciation (64) in the Cathedral of Beirne.
