An automatic continuous-firing weapon that uses the same principle as a machine gun. In the U.S. military, any caliber between 16mm and 37mm was called a machine gun. It was mainly mounted on aircraft and tanks, and used as an anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapon. After World War II, machines with continuous-firing mechanisms powered by external electric motors or gas turbines, such as the Gatling gun, appeared. Since the early 1970s, aircraft machine guns have been used in conjunction with rockets and missiles. In the former Imperial Japanese Navy, all calibers under 40mm were called machine guns.
