Kagamiyama Nishiki Maple Leaves

This refers to a group of Kabuki and Ningyo-joruri plays based on the Kaga Uprising. The first dramatization of this was in 1780 (An'ei 9) by Naka Kamesuke, Kagamiyama Sato no Kikigaki (A Manuscript of the Kagamiyama Pleasure Valley), which premiered in Osaka. Later, after adaptations of real events were permitted in the Meiji period, Kawatake Mokuami wrote Kagamiyama Nishiki no Momijiba (Golden Maple Leaves of Mt. Kagami), which was performed in 1876 and starred the great actors of the time, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Onoe Kikugoro V, Ichikawa Sadanji I, and Iwai Hanshiro VIII. It was an unparalleled stage production for this type of play, but it has not been performed many times since. The same author also wrote a sequel five years later, which appears to have been an adaptation of a script by Katsu Genzo of Osaka.

［加賀騒動物］
　加賀騒動を材料にした歌舞伎および人形浄瑠璃の作品群をいう。最初にこれを劇化したのは1780年(安永9)奈河亀輔の《加賀見山廓写本（かがみやまさとのききがき）》で大坂初演，のちに明治に実録の脚色が許されてから河竹黙阿弥が1876年に書きおろした《鏡山錦楓葉（かがみやまにしきのもみじば）》は，当時の名優9世市川団十郎，5世尾上菊五郎，初世市川左団次，8世岩井半四郎の共演で，この種の劇としては無類の舞台を作ったが，その後の上演数は多くない。この脚本は，同じ作者が5年目に後日譚を書いてもいるが，これは大阪の勝諺蔵（かつげんぞう）の脚本を改作したものらしい。…
