The Japanese era name (nengo). It was the era name of Emperor Daigo from 901 to 923 during the Heian period. The previous era name was Shotai . The era name was Encho . The era name was changed on July 15, 901 (Shotai 4). In January of that year, the Minister of the Right, Sugawara no Michizane , was demoted to Dazaifu as Dazaigon no Sochi (Commander of the Dazai ) due to slander by the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Tokihira ( Shotai Incident). The era name was changed to end the confusion caused by this political upheaval and because 901 was the year of Xinyou ( Shin'yu ), which is said to be the year when the mandate of heaven is changed (the year of revolution when the dynasty changes). The name was derived from the "Shangshu Senjikyou". During the Engi era, Emperor Daigo formally ruled the country, and this period later came to be known as the Engi era.
