A marine fish of the family Crocodilidae in the order Lamniformes. Wani means shark. Fishermen call it Tobituki. It is found in many tropical and temperate open oceans around the world, and in Japan, it is found off the coast of central and southern Japan. It is a somewhat deep-sea fish, living in depths of up to 100m. It only grows to about 1m in length. It is characterized by large eyes, fang-like teeth, and short pectoral and caudal fins. The English name bigeye ragged-tooth shark comes from these characteristics. There may or may not be a white stripe on the side of the head in front of the gill slits.
