Service industry

Japanese: サービス業 - サービスぎょう

In the broad sense, the service industry is a general term for industries that provide intangible goods such as transportation, communications, commerce, finance, public service, freelance work, and barbering. It has roughly the same scope as the tertiary industry, and when the economy reaches a certain stage of development, the proportion of this sector in the gross national product increases. Recently, it has become increasingly important due to the development of the information industry. In the narrow sense, the service industry is narrower and refers to industries such as goods rental, cleaning, hotels, entertainment, broadcasting, and medical care.

広義にサービス産業を指す場合は，運輸，通信，商業，金融，公務，自由業，あるいは理容業など，用役（サービス）という無体の商品を提供する産業の総称。第三次産業とほぼその範囲を同じくし，経済の発展が一定段階に達すると国民総生産に占めるこの部門の比率が向上する。最近は情報産業の発達などによりますます重要性を高めている。なお狭義にサービス業というときはその範囲は狭く，物品賃貸，クリーニング，旅館，娯楽，放送，医療などの業種をさす。
