Kawauchi [Village] - Kawauchi

Japanese: 川内[村] - かわうち

A village in Futaba County, eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Population 3,797 (1995). Located on the eastern foot of Mt. Otakine (1,193m), the highest peak in the Abukuma Highlands, and upstream of the Kido River. 90% of the village area is forest land, nearly half of which is village-owned forest. This forest land, covering 9,000 hectares, was incorporated into government land in the early Meiji period and became village-owned forest in 1911 after an administrative lawsuit was won. It once produced charcoal and supported the village's finances. A typical agricultural and mountain village, with just under 40% of the employed population working in the primary industry. Rice, highland vegetables, and tobacco are cultivated on the cultivated land along the Kido River at an average altitude of 450m, and livestock and dairy farming are on the rise.

福島県東部，双葉郡の村。人口3797(1995)。阿武隈高地最高峰の大滝根山(1193m)東麓，木戸川上流を占める。村域の9割は林野からなり，うち半分近くは村有林で，これは明治初期に官有地に編入された9000haに及ぶ林地を1911年行政訴訟の勝訴により村有林としたもので，かつては製炭材を産出し，村の財政を支えた。就業人口の4割弱を第1次産業が占める典型的農山村で，木戸川沿いの平均高度450mの耕地では米，高原野菜，葉タバコが栽培され，畜産，酪農が増加している。
