...There are various types of desks, such as a writing desk used for reading or writing, a front desk placed in front of the Buddha on which an incense burner is placed, a sutra desk used when reading sutras, and a dining table used to place food and drink on. In kanji, it is originally written as 'ki', which comes from a pictograph depicting a square stand with legs, but in Japanese, 'tsukue' means 'a place to live', and originally meant a dining table on which a 'tsukue' (a vessel for holding food) was placed. Later, when writing desks and sutra desks appeared, the word 'tsukue' gradually came to refer to these, but even today, the monks at Todaiji Temple eat at a 'ki'-shaped dining table, called a 'Nigatsudo table'...

…読書や物書きなどに使う文机（ふづくえ），仏前に置き香炉など載せる前机，経を読むときに使う経机，飲食物を載せて食事するのに使う食卓など各種ある。漢字ではもと几（き）と書き，これは脚付きの四角い台を描いた象形文字から発しているが，日本語の〈つくえ〉は〈坏居（つきう）え〉の意味で，元来は坏(食物を入れた器)を載せる食卓を意味している。後に文机や経机が出てくると，しだいに〈つくえ〉といえばこれらを指すようになったが，現在でも東大寺の修二会のときに僧たちが食事をするのには几形の食卓を用いており，二月堂机とよばれている。…
