Chichen Itza (English spelling)

Japanese: チチェン･イッツァ（英語表記）Chichén Itzá

Mayan ruins in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. Chichen means "by the well" in Mayan, and Itza means "water magician" in Mayan. As the name suggests, the history of this town unfolded around a natural well (cenote). The ruins cover an area of 3km x 2km, and cultural layers from the Preclassic period have also been found. However, from around the 6th century, the town began to flourish with the construction of several building complexes in the Puuc style, an architectural style in which the upper halves of buildings are decorated with mosaic carvings.

メキシコ，ユカタン州にあるマヤ文化の遺跡。チチェンは〈井戸のほとり〉，イッツァは〈水の魔術師〉を意味するマヤ語である。その名が示すように，天然の井戸〈セノーテ〉を中心に，この町の歴史は展開した。遺跡は3km×2kmの広域にわたり，先古典期からの文化層も見つかっているが，6世紀ころから，プーク様式という，モザイク彫刻で建物の上半分を装飾する建築様式による建造物複合体がいくつか建設され，町は栄え始める。
