It belongs to the family Nitidulidae in the order Coleoptera and is distributed widely throughout the world. It is called the dried-fruit beetle in English, but it is known to damage many grains as well as dried fruits. In Japan, it has long been known as a Nitidulid beetle that grows in kitchens (kuriya). It prefers grains that are overgrown with mold such as Aspergillus oryzae, so it often occurs in large numbers in breweries that produce miso and soy sauce. Adults are brown with yellow bases and the rear halves of the forewings. The ends of the forewings are cut, leaving two abdominal segments exposed.
