Born: August 1, 1881, Cambridge, Massachusetts [Died] June 9, 1955. Cambridge, Massachusetts. American scholar of Oriental art and travel explorer. Graduated from Harvard University. Entered the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, where he continued his research under Okakura Kakuzo (→Okakura Tenshin), head of the Oriental art department. Later served as director of the Pennsylvania Museum of Art and director of the Oriental art department at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum. He frequently visited Japan and China. Known for The Enduring Art of Japan (1950) and other writings. During World War II, he served on the Committee for the Preservation and Salvation of Art and Historical Sites in War Zones, and his maps and reports on Japanese art and ruins are said to have saved Kyoto and Nara from war damage.
