Born: August 24, 1922, New Carlisle, Quebec Died November 1, 1987. Montreal Canadian politician. After dropping out of Laval University, he went to the United States in 1944 and worked as a journalist during World War II. In 1946, he returned to Montreal and joined the National Broadcasting Corporation of Canada, where he gained popularity as a television commentator. In the 1950s, he worked hard to realize the "Quiet Revolution" with P. Trudeau. He became Minister of Natural Resources in the Quebec government under the Quebec Liberal Party led by J. Lesage, but left the Liberal Party in 1967 and formed the Parti Quebecois in 1968. In November 1976, he achieved his long-cherished goal of gaining power in Quebec. He took a social democratic stance and drew a line between himself and radical separatists, but he advocated secession and independence for Quebec. However, he lost the referendum on secession and independence in May 1980. He retired in 1985. Rebec |
