…Portuguese politician. Born to a poor farmer's family in Santa Comba Dão, Viseu. He entered seminary at the age of 11, but enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra in 1910, and became an assistant professor of economics in 1917. He was strongly influenced by the social Catholicism of Pope Leo XIII and the political ideas of C. Moras, and after World War I he gained the support of the traditional middle class as a right-wing conservative debater opposed to the First Republic. In 1928, he was invited to become Minister of Finance by the military dictatorship that had overthrown the democratic parliamentary system in a coup d'état in May 1926. He was given full authority over financial expenditures, overcoming the long-standing financial crisis and becoming Portugal's "savior" all at once. …
