Also called "Kawashi." A method of remittance in the Kamakura and Muromachi periods. The beginning of foreign exchange occurred around the middle of the Kamakura period. In an era when it was extremely difficult to transport cash, it was used as a means of payment to distant places, such as when sending taxes from a distant manor to a manor lord in Kyoto, or when raising travel expenses for pilgrimages to shrines and temples, and in the Muromachi period, it was used as a means of settlement for commodity transactions. The bills were called saifu, and in areas with thriving commercial activities, cash was paid to a merchant called a kazeniya or warifuya, who would issue a saifu and send the money to the other party. There was no official guarantee, and it was established based on the mutual trust between merchants.
