This is a Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple. Renjun, the sixth son of Honganji Renyo, founded it in Nagashima, Kuwana County, Ise around 1501 (Bunki 1). It controlled the Honganji religious community in Mino, Owari, and Ise regions, and exerted influence through alliances with powerful samurai such as the Toki clan. Renjun also played an important role in the religious community as he was the maternal grandfather of the 10th abbot of Honganji, Shonyo. In 1559 (Eiroku 2), Honganji was appointed as a monzeki temple, and the following year he became a member of the inke family. In 1574 (Tensho 2), the Ishiyama War broke out again between Honganji and Oda Nobunaga, and Nobunaga attacked Ganshoji. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
