<br /> A teahouse in Sugata-machi, Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. This teahouse was built in the mountain villa of the Arisawa family, a former chief retainer of the Matsue domain. Around 1792 (Kansei 4), the thatched-roofed hip-and- gable Sugata-an and steam-style bathhouse were built at the direction of the seventh domain lord Matsudaira Harusato ( Fumai ), who was known as a tea master and cultural figure. The Kougetsu-tei teahouse and garden adjacent to Sugata - an were designed by Harusato's younger brother, Nobuchika ( Sessen ), who was known as a leading man of refined tastes of the time. These three buildings together are generally referred to as Sugata- an . The arrangement of the buildings, plants, stepping stones, and other elements, as well as the idea of having the bathhouse double as a waiting room, make this a famous place of elegance and charm that only Fumai, who had mastered the art of tea, could have. The location faces southeast and offers a panoramic view across the Ohashi River to Mt. Daisen . It was designated a national historic site and place of scenic beauty in 1928 (Showa 3). The three buildings are also designated as important cultural properties. Take a city bus from Matsue Station on the JR San'in Main Line to the "Sugata-an Iriguchi" stop, and walk for about 15 minutes. Source: Kodansha National Historic Site Guide Information |
