A Shinto scholar from the mid-Edo period. Also known as Deguchi Nobuyoshi. Born in Ise on April 28, 1600. Nicknamed Yozaburo. Originally called Nobuyoshi, he later changed his name to Nobuyoshi. He was known as Shinano and Gudayu, and also took the names Jikian and Kokodo. At the age of six, he was appointed deputy chief priest of Toyouke Grand Shrine, and while serving the gods, he worked to promote Watarai Shinto (Ise Shinto). The distinctive feature of his theory was that it broke away from medieval thought and simply advocated the "middle-level Shinto transmitted through the Nichiki region." In 1648 (Keian 1), he founded the Toyomiyazaki Library with 70 of his comrades, edited and compiled the Shinsho Kyuki (Records of the Ancient Books of the Shinto Shrine), and promoted the opening of secret books. His scientific name was heard by Emperor Gokomyo, and he presented the Daijingu Sankeiki (Records of Pilgrimages to the Grand Shrine of Ise) to Tokugawa Mitsukuni at his suggestion. Many brilliant scholars came under his tutelage, including Yamamoto Hirotari (1642-1710), Mano Tokitsuna (1648-1717), and Kawabe Yonaga (1602-1688). He also achieved many things, such as reviving the Tanoe Omizu Shrine, a subsidiary shrine, as a member of the four clans of Watarai. He was promoted to the rank of Shoshi no Ge when Emperor Higashiyama ascended to the throne. He passed away on January 16, 16th, Genroku 3. He is the author of many books, including his main work, "Yofukuki," "Taisho Shinto Wakumon," "Jingu Hiden Mondo," "Ise Taisho Shrine Shiniki," and "Nakatomi Harae Mizuhosho."
