...To prevent the aircraft from tipping over on the water, many of them have auxiliary floats (small boat-shaped floats) near the wingtips. The first flying boat was built in 1912 by American Glenn Curtiss (1873-1930), and was widely used by navies and civilians in various countries for maritime patrols and maritime air transport from World War I to World War II. This was because, at the time, there were no airfields with long runways like today, and flying boats had the advantage of being able to take off heavy aircraft carrying cargo and the large amounts of fuel needed for long-distance flights, as there were many water surfaces over which they could run for a long distance, and because they offered peace of mind in the event of an emergency landing due to engine failure during flight. ...
