Kain pandjang (English spelling) Indonesian

Japanese: カイン・パンジャン - かいんぱんじゃん(英語表記)kain pandjang インドネシア語
Kain pandjang (English spelling) Indonesian

It is a wrap-around skirt, one of the national costumes worn by both men and women in Indonesia. Kaing means "cloth" and panjang means "long". It is made of batik, or wax-dyed chintz, cotton, about 1 meter wide and 2 to 4 meters long, and is wrapped around the lower body in fine pleats from the center front to the left side. It is formal attire for women, especially when worn with a tight long-sleeved blouse called kabaja and a shawl called slèndang, but recently it has become common to wear a sarong (originally meaning "scabbard" or "cylinder" in Malay, and sarung in Indonesian) as casual attire. Men, who have become increasingly Western-style, rarely wear it except for ceremonies and traditional dances. Thus, Kaing Panjang is the most universal and traditional of Indonesian national costumes, and even though kabaja and slèndang have become made of synthetic fibers, this is the only one that preserves the traditional batik material.
