[Died] May 26, 1982. Pastor, evangelist, and social activist. Born as the third daughter of Uemura Masahisa, a leader in the Christian world in Japan. After World War II, in 1946, she was invited by the Presbyterian Church of North America to travel officially to the United States, the first Japanese person to do so, and played a role in easing anti-Japanese sentiment. In 1955, she worked hard for the peace movement, forming the "Committee of Seven Appealing for World Peace" with Hideki Yukawa and others.
