Born: August 24, 1890, Tokyo [Died] May 26, 1982. Pastor, evangelist, and social activist. Born as the third daughter of Uemura Masahisa, a leader in the Christian world in Japan. After graduating from Joshi Gakuin, she studied at Wellesley College in the United States. She married in 1917, but lost her husband two years later. She taught at Joshi Gakuin and other schools, but in 1925, after her father's death, she decided to become an evangelist and studied at the Department of Theology at Edinburgh University in the United Kingdom. In 1931, she founded the Kashiwagi Church of the Church of Christ in Japan, becoming Japan's first female evangelist. She served as president of the Japan YMCA and vice president of the World YMCA. After World War II, in 1946, she was invited by the Presbyterian Church of North America to travel officially to the United States, the first Japanese person to do so, and played a role in easing anti-Japanese sentiment. In 1955, she worked hard for the peace movement, forming the "Committee of Seven Appealing for World Peace" with Hideki Yukawa and others.
