They are also called the Levites. A priestly family in ancient Judaism. They were originally one of the 12 tribes of ancient Israel. They gradually formed a clan that carried and passed on the religious traditions of ancient Israel, and furthermore, triggered by the religious reforms of Josiah (around 620 B.C.), they became a lower-ranking priest class. They were apparently officials who performed rituals directly under the temple during Jesus' time, and Jesus criticized the Levites for their formalism, which lacked love (Luke 10:32). The Levites were named after Levi, the son of Jacob, one of the fathers of Israel, and Moses is said to have been of Levi's descent. The Old Testament contains the Book of Leviticus, which records ritual regulations. [Tsukimoto Akio] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
