Together with the Honshō-zu (Honjō-zu), which is a pictorial depiction of the story of Shakyamuni's previous life, the avadāna (Hyū-nari) (Story of Allegory) (which is based on the past and present stories of Buddhist disciples and devout believers), and the Henshō-zu (Mahayāna-kyōhen), which illustrates the contents of Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures, they constitute a group of Buddhist narrative illustrations.
