An old town in Saihaku District, western Tottori Prefecture. The main settlement, Hosshoji, is located in the upper reaches of the Hosshoji River, a tributary of the Hino River, and was a post town in the early modern period. In the mountainous area upstream, tatara ironworks were popular. The town produces rice, Japanese beef, and forest products, and is known for Hosshoji ware. Higashinagata is a habitat for Japanese giant salamanders (a special natural monument). In October 2004, it merged with Aimi Town, Saihaku District, to become Nanbu Town. 83.08 km2 . 鳥取県西部,西伯郡の旧町。主集落法勝寺(ほっしょうじ)は日野川の支流法勝寺川の上流域にあり,近世の宿場町。上流山地では,たたら製鉄が盛んであった。米,和牛,林産物を生産,法勝寺焼を特産。東長田はオオサンショウウオ(特別天然記念物)の生息地。2004年10月西伯郡会見町と合併し町制,南部町となる。83.08km2。8190人(2003)。
