Located in central Kanagawa Prefecture, this plateau is sandwiched between the Sagami River and its tributary, the Nakatsu River; the northern half belongs to Aikawa Town, Aiko District, and the southern half to Atsugi City. Although there are steep cliffs on both the east and west sides of the plateau facing the two rivers, the surface is mostly flat, with an elevation of about 180m at the northern end and about 50m at the southern end. The geology is the same as that of the Sagamihara Plateau on the east bank of the Sagami River; the surface is covered by a 10-14m thick Kanto Loam layer, with a terrace gravel layer underneath and a deep groundwater table. The plateau was covered entirely by mulberry fields, until the end of World War II, when an army airfield was established in Nakatsu in the center, and in 1966 the Kanagawa Prefectural Enterprise Bureau developed an inland industrial park on the site.
