Also called step mining. A typical method of open-cut mining. After stripping, the deposit is excavated in steps, 4-25m high and 10-25m wide from the surface. Large machinery and vehicles can be used to efficiently excavate large deposits, but the terrain and geology must be suitable. Much of the copper and iron ore in the United States is extracted this way, and the Utah Copper Mine is particularly famous for this method. 階段掘りとも。露天掘りの代表的な方法。剥土(はくど)後,地表から1段の高さ4〜25m,幅10〜25mの階段状に鉱床の採掘を進めるやり方。大型機械,大型車両が利用でき,大鉱床を能率的に採掘できるが,地形,地質などが適合していることが要件。米国の銅・鉄鉱石の多くはこの方法で採掘され,ユタ銅山が特に有名。
