Also called kamiebi. A deciduous woody vine of the Menispermaceae family. It is found in the mountains and fields of Honshu, Okinawa, and East Asia. The leaves are alternate and long-stalked, ovate, and sometimes shallowly divided into three lobes. In summer, many small yellowish-white flowers grow in cone-like formations in the leaf axils. The plant is dioecious, and female plants produce spherical fruits that turn black in autumn. The xylem and roots are called mokuboi and are used medicinally. カミエビとも。ツヅラフジ科の落葉性の木性つる植物。本州〜沖縄,東アジアに分布し山野にはえる。葉は長い柄があって互生し,卵形で,ときに3浅裂。夏,葉腋に多数の小さな黄白色花を円錐状につける。雌雄異株で,雌株には秋,球形の果実が黒熟。木部と根を木防巳(もくぼうい)と称し,薬用。
