Murotsu

Japanese: 室津 - むろつ
Murotsu
This is an old village area in the southwest of Tatsuno City, in the southwest of Hyogo Prefecture. It faces the Harima Nada Sea. Village ordinances were enacted in 1889. In 1951, it was merged with Mitsu Town to form Mitsu Town, and in 2005, it was merged with Tatsuno City, Shingu Town, and Ibogawa Town to form Tatsuno City. It is a port town that developed in the inlet between Moburihana and Akamatsuhana, and was one of the five Setsubun-Hachinohe islands during the Nara and Heian periods. During the Edo period, it prospered as a landing point for many feudal lords who traveled east by sea on their alternate attendance tours. There were also honjin and wakihonjin. On the hill overlooking Murotsu Port is Kamo Shrine, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. After the Meiji period, the center of prosperity shifted elsewhere due to poor railroad connections and a narrow port. It is known as a famous plum blossom spot.
