A port town on the north shore of the Gulf of Salerno, about 15 km southwest of Salerno, in the province of Salerno in Campania, southern Italy. It flourished as a port town after coming under the control of the Byzantine Empire, and prospered as a maritime republic rivaling Pisa in the 9th century, but was destroyed by Pisa in 1135 and 1137 and fell into decline. A picturesque old town on a beautiful coast, it is one of Italy's leading tourist and health destinations, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997. The Basilica of Sant'Andrea, built in the 9th century, is a Lombard-Norman style building with a black and white stone facade (restored in the 19th century), and the magnificent bronze doorway was made in Constantinople (now Istanbul) around 1066. There is a food industry. Population 5,585 (1991 estimate).

イタリア南部，カンパーニア州サレルノ県，サレルノ西南西約 15km，サレルノ湾北岸にある港町。ビザンチン帝国の支配下に入ってから港町として栄え，9世紀にはピサに対抗する海洋共和国として繁栄したが，1135年と 1137年にピサによって破壊され，衰退。美しい海岸にある絵のような古い町で，1997年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録されたイタリア有数の観光地，保養地。なかでも9世紀創建のサンタンドレア聖堂は白と黒の石のファサード (19世紀修復) をもつロンバルド・ノルマン風の建物で，壮麗な青銅の戸口は 1066年頃にコンスタンチノープル (現イスタンブール) でつくられたもの。食品工業がある。人口 5585 (1991推計) 。
