This is a typical type of epileptic seizure, also known as pure petit mal or absence. Consciousness is suddenly lost without convulsions and then suddenly restored. In mild seizures, consciousness may be relatively well-maintained. It lasts from a few to 20 seconds, and occurs several to a dozen times a day. It is common in girls between the ages of 9 and 15, and is easily triggered by hyperventilation. During a seizure, the eyes are open, but unlike incomplete grand mal seizures, the eyes do not roll upwards, i.e., the eyes do not whiten, and the patient stares straight ahead and remains fixed.
