Kyoto Mansion

Japanese:
Kyoto Mansion
Edo period feudal domain residences in Kyoto. In the early Edo period, Kyoto was the base of control over Western Japan, and not only the feudal lords and magistrates of Western Japan, but also the Edo Shogunate had their residences in Kyoto. A 1637 (Kan'ei 14) Kyoto map confirmed that there were 20 eastern daimyo, 48 western daimyo, and over 60 samurai residences such as magistrates, with the residences of the Shoshidai and Shogunate officials mainly located around Nijo Castle, and the rest buried in various parts of the city. As Kyoto's political status declined with the promotion of a unified Shogunate government in the mid-Edo period, the functions of the Kyoto residences also changed, and they became the place to communicate ceremonies and rituals, purchase high-end crafts, obtain finance from Kyoto townspeople, and sell domestic products.
