A lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon in which the full moon appears to be eclipsed, affecting the entire moon. As the Earth's shadow cast by sunlight falls on the moon, the moon gradually eclipses from its edges until the entire moon enters the Earth's shadow. At this time, the moon does not completely disappear, but rather appears copper-red because the sunlight is refracted and scattered by the Earth's atmosphere, and red light reaches the lunar surface. This state of "total eclipse" lasts for about several tens of minutes to an hour, after which the moon returns to its original position in the opposite direction to when it began. When only a part of the moon is eclipsed without a total eclipse occurring, it is called a "partial lunar eclipse." In the 100 years of the 21st century, there have been 85 total lunar eclipses and 57 partial lunar eclipses around the world.

満月が欠けていくように見える「月食」が月全体に及ぶ天文現象のこと。太陽光による地球の影が月にかかっていくことによって、月が次第に端から欠けていき、月全体が地球の影に入る。この時、月は完全に見えなくなるわけではなく、地球の大気により太陽光が屈折・散乱されて赤系の光が月面に届くため、月は赤銅色に見える。この「皆既食」の状態は数十分から1時間ほど続き、その後月は始まりと逆の方向から元に戻っていく。皆既食を起こさず一部分だけが欠けるものは「部分月食」という。21世紀の100年間で皆既月食は全世界で85回、部分月食は57回起こる。
