Dmitrii Vasil'evich Grigorovich

Dmitrii Vasil'evich Grigorovich
1822‐99
Russian author. Influenced by European "peasant novels" such as those by Balzac and George Sand, he wrote the first Russian peasant novels, "The Village" (1846) and "Unfortunate Anton" (1847). His method of portraying peasants (narods) as protagonists with sympathy had a great influence on Turgenev, and these two works made him the most important writer of the new literary school, the "naturalist" school, represented by Gogol. A graduate of the Polytechnic School, he introduced his junior student Dostoevsky to the literary world, but 40 years later he made a major contribution to the history of Russian literature by discovering Chekhov.

Yurii Nikolaevich Grigorovich

1927‐
Russian dance director. Graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School in 1946, he was a soloist at the Kirov Theater, but also showed enthusiasm for choreography and direction, and his extraordinary talent was recognized with his direction of Prokofiev's The Stone Flower (1957) and AD Melikov's The Legend of Love (1961). After these works were performed at the Bolshoi Theater, he became the theater's principal ballet master in 1964, and first began to work on new stagings of classics, revising Tchaikovsky's three great ballets to fit modern logic, thinking, and sensibilities.
