…He retired from military service in 1902 to concentrate on composing and conducting, and achieved the greatest success in the history of operetta with his work The Merry Widow, which premiered in Vienna in 1905. After World War I, he lost popularity to the influx of American pop music, but regained it with a series of works he wrote for the famous tenor Richard Tauber (1891-1948), including Die lustige Witwe (1929). His wife was Jewish, but Hitler liked his works, so he was unfortunate in his later years after World War II. …
