An orchestral keyboard instrument similar to a small upright piano. Also called a celesta. It was patented in 1886 by Parisian instrument maker Auguste Mustel. Metallic bars (glockenspiel) are placed under the keys, and small hammer felts strike the bars using a simple striking mechanism. Wooden resonators are placed under each bar to amplify the fundamental waves (component tones) emitted by the bars. Pressing the pedal raises the dampers holding the bars, allowing the sound to be extended or softened. The standard range is four octaves from middle C upwards. A similar instrument called the dulcitone, which uses tuning forks instead of bars and has a softer tone than the celesta, is sometimes mistakenly called the celesta. The dulcitone was invented in 1865 by Mustel's father, Victor, and patented in 1868 after further improvements.
