The name of a place on the right bank of the mouth of the Jinzu River in Shinkawa County, Etchu Province (present-day Toyama City). It has been a key transportation point since ancient times, and Iwase Station appears in the Engishiki, but Higashiiwase was first seen in 1572 (Genki 3). In the early modern period, the course of the Jinzu River changed to form a port, which connected with Hida Province and became a transit point for Hida timber and Noto salt. The town was governed by the Yadokata, Urakata, and Tajiki districts, and each town had its own chief officer and association leader. Fishing was also thriving, with 12 seine nets and hand-held nets in 1611 (Keicho 16). In 1662 (Kanbun 2), there were 24 post horses, which served the Yadokata and Tajiki districts.
