Born: June 7, 1845, Besprem [Died] July 15, 1930, Dresden, Loschwitz. Hungarian violinist and educator. After studying in Budapest and Vienna, he studied under J. Joachim in Hannover. After serving as concertmaster in the orchestras of Düsseldorf in 1863 and Hamburg in 1866, he was invited to St. Petersburg in 1868 as a court soloist and professor at the conservatory, and in the same year he presided over the Russian Royal Musical Society. He was elevated to the nobility, but resigned his position and moved to Dresden and then New York to teach. A great educator who produced such outstanding disciples as M. Elman, J. Heifetz, E. Zimbalist, and N. Milstein. He left behind books on playing technique and short pieces for the violin.
