A port town in the Calvados department in northwestern France. Located on the south side of the Seine estuary, across from Le Havre, it is a seaside tourist destination bustling with yachts. It is known for the beautiful scenery of its port, surrounded by buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries. It was an important base for sea routes to North America until the center moved to Le Havre in the 19th century. Champlain, who founded Quebec in Canada, departed from here (1608). The church of Saint Catherine (15th century), shaped like a wooden ship, is famous. Furniture manufacturing is the main industry. Population 8,125 (1982).
