…In the mid-19th century, landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing (1815-52) introduced Tudor and Italianate architectural and landscaping styles through his writings, while urging the creation of a unique American style of wooden house by directly expressing the traditional wooden building features of sticks in both structure and finish. After the Civil War, new ideas were introduced for medium-sized houses, and the shingle style, a type of thatched roofing characterized by free floor plans and the expression of expansive mass, produced masterpieces such as the Stoughton House (designed by H.H. Richardson, 1882-83, Cambridge). At the end of the 19th century, a backlash from academicism prompted a revival of tradition, a trend that continued for the next half century. …
