North American Nebula

Japanese: 北アメリカ星雲 - きたあめりかせいうん（英語表記）North American Nebula

An emission nebula (NGC7000) located near the first magnitude star Deneb in Cygnus. It was named after its shape, which resembles the North American continent. Its apparent size is about 100 arc minutes. It is 2000 light years away from Earth, but its actual size is about 50 light years. The Pelican Nebula is located next to it, separated from the dark nebula that forms the Gulf of Mexico. It is thought that the two nebulae are ionized by an excited star behind the dark nebula. This region is one of the active star-forming regions in the Milky Way, and contains a mixture of emission nebulae, dark nebulae, and reflection nebulae.

はくちょう座の1等星デネブの近くにある発光星雲（NGC7000）。その形が北アメリカ大陸に似ていることからこの名前がついた。見かけの大きさは約100分角。地球からの距離は2000光年で実際の大きさは約50光年である。メキシコ湾を形づくっている暗黒星雲を挟んで、隣にペリカン星雲がある。この暗黒星雲の背後にある励起星によって、二つの星雲が電離されていると考えられている。この領域は、天の川の中の活発な星生成領域の一つで、発光星雲、暗黒星雲、反射星雲が入り交じって存在している。
