Born: September 21, 1849, London [Died] May 16, 1928, London. British critic and literary historian. He grew up in a Puritan family, and his experiences of intense love and hate for his father led him to become interested in literature, which he details in his autobiography, Father and Son (1907). He was once a staff member of the British Museum and the House of Lords, but continued to write, publishing literary histories such as 18th Century Literature (1889), biographies of T. Gray and Donne, and translations of Ibsen's plays. He was a pioneer not only in the study of 17th and 18th century English literature, but also in the study of Scandinavian and French literature.
