1852‐1908 Yugoslav author. Born in Croatia. Unable to become a priest, he fled from a monastery and studied at a normal school in Zadar. While working as a middle school teacher in Montenegro and Serbia, he wrote short stories and novels and translated works by Maupassant and Zola. His novel, Friar Brunée Márquez (1892), is a masterpiece of realism depicting life in a Franciscan monastery on the Dalmatian coast, but is also full of tropical humor. In Uskok (The Righteous Robber) (1902), he praised the heroic life of the Montenegrin people, who were rich in local color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
